Default Na'vi Research Study

Kaltxì, my name is Christine Schreyer and I am an assistant professor of Anthropology at UBC (Okanagan campus). Recently, I taught a course that focused partially on created languages, including Na’vi, and I have since become intrigued by the large numbers of people who are learning the Na’vi language around the world and I would like to learn more about who these learners are, why they are interested in learning Na’vi, how they are learning it, and how they think the Na’vi language will develop over the next few years.

I have already posted this survey at Learn the Na'vi Language from the film Avatar, but if you have not filled it in yet you can do so here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NAVI

While the survey says you must be 19 years of age to participate, that has been changed and anyone 8 years old and up can answer. There is even a kids version at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NAVIkids.

Also, the survey is available in a few other languages (Russian, Ukrainian, German, French and Hungarian) courtesy of some wonderful volunteers at Learn the Na'vi Language from the film Avatar, so if you know someone who can not answer in English, but can in those language please let me know and I'll send you the link.

I just ask that people only fill in the survey once, with one exception. The survey was also translated in Na'vi to see if there were individuals who only wanted to answer in that language or wanted to try and answer in Na'vi even if they have answered in another language. There is a question on this version that asks if you have filled in another survey so that way I know if the data has been repeated elsewhere.

I think that is all - sorry for the long post!

Feel free to share the survey address with anyone you think might be interested as well.

Following the completion of the survey, I will provide a summary report on the forums as well. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you all.

Irayo!

Christine Schreyer, PhD

Kaltxì, ma Mikko (and anyone else who is interested),

Here is the message I posted on Learn the Na'vi Language from the film Avatar recently, that you may want to see as well.

Apologies for the necro-post, but I wanted to let you know that I have now completed the analysis of the first ten questions in the Na'vi Research Study. The report (compiled with Prrton's help) is now available for download. Analysis of questions 11-20 will be happening over the next few months as well.

You can access the report on my website: Research
The file is called "Report on Na'vi Research © Christine Schreyer (October 2011)" and it is below a description of the research itself. I will be presenting some of these results at the American Anthropology Association's annual conference in Montreal, QC, Canada on Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 at 8:45pm. I can post more details about where if anyone is interested and able to make it to the presentation.

I look forward to hearing your feedback on the results compiled so far and am happy to answer any questions as well. Smiley

Irayo to all!

ta, Kìrìstin

Kaltxì ma Kìrìstin,
Thanks for posting your results for us to read!

Some very interesting findings in there. I'm looking forward to part 2.

Whether it was your intent or not; this study is again another wonderful thing helping Na'vi grow. Irayo for your support of the language, the community, and what it means to us.

Irayo!

A very interesting read. I guess the most common groups of speakers were as I expected, but the wider range is a lot of different people. I'm REALLY surprised that anyone actually said they didn't like Avatar though... Still, a lot of people are like me, a 'huge fan'
