Jake's impressive ability to avoid death

I've been thinking about making a list on Jake's close encounters with death throughout the movie...and here it is:


1. Jake was nearly ran over by a Hammerhead (thanks to whatever that made the Hammerhead stop at the last inch)

2. Jake was nearly eaten by a Thanator

3. Jake was nearly killed by Neytiri (thanks to Eywa and Neytiri's judgement)

4. Jake was nearly killed by Viperwolves (thanks to Neytiri)

4. Jake nearly fell off the tree when he was following Neytiri after they first met (thanks to Neytiri again)

5. Jake nearly fell off the cliff while trying to bond with an Ikran (thanks to that tree branch)

6. Jake nearly fell off his Ikran during his first flight

7. Jake was nearly eaten by Toruk

8. Jake nearly got smashed by the Tree of Voices during RDA's bulldozing

9. Jake (his avatar) was nearly killed by Tsu'tey after Quaritch cut his link

10. Jake was nearly executed by the clan (thanks to Quaritch for arriving in time?)

11. Jake was nearly blown to pieces (thanks to Mo'at for cutting him loose)

12. Jake was nearly shot by Quaritch during his escape with Trudy and the science crew

13. And finally, after dodging countless bullets during the battle, Jake was nearly killed by Quaritch both in the air and on the ground.

LOL, this is pretty much why. The hero must overcome all obstacles that stand in his way. He must survive in the end (at least in most action/sci-fi/fantasy/superhero movies). If anyone must be killed of it will either be a sidekick, a minor character with some kind of red on them or at times it would be his love interest. If he must die, then the love interest must live. Of course, there are times when both will die (Romeo and Juliet) or the Hero dies (Hamlet, King Lear, etc).

In the kind of movie that Avatar is, it would make sense for Jake to survive. There wouldn't be much of a story without him.

The story of Grigory Rasputin, he took enough Cyanide to kill 5 men and survived without feeling anything, then was shot in the head, but soon got up off the ground unscathed and proceeded to walk away. However he was then shot a further three times and pinned down, tied up and thrown into a river. He was still alive when he went into the river, unsuprisingly.

I don't think it was 11 times though.

-Not shooting him (debatable as to whether it counts)
-Killing the viperwolves
-Stopping Jake falling off the branch
-Telling Tsu'tey to stop
-Protecting Jake when he loses the link
-Attacking Quaritch on the Thanator
-Shooting Quaritch
