Couldn't have said it better myself. COD4 was the last original COD IMO.

WaW and Blops weren't bad ideas. Treyarch is just a very bad studio.

The most surprising thing for me is that so many people bought it for the full price. I was one of the few that looked up on Ebay for it and got it for half price. Honestly, what happened to the smart consumer?

Because this proves people are prepared to pay good money repeatedly for a reskinned game.

This, although I'd add that it was never a good game in the first place anyway

COD4 was a landmark in FPS history. It's sent the industry standard.

And unfortunately, too many studios try to emulate COD4's success by employing methods that only works with COD mechanics. One specific example is BF3's campaign. It managed to find the rare balance between dull and frustrating, mainly because it goes out of its way to create a COD-like experience that is frankly ill-suited for Battlefield. (BF3's multiplayer is quite good, so it somewhat makes up for the whole package.) COD4 really diluted the creativity of its genre, although that may change in the future.

This problem isn't exclusive to shooters. I would say that publishers are more to blame though. I don't know who's worse, EA (with their plan on alternating between MOH and BF every year) or Activision (yearly COD releases alternating between studios). Oh well, lets wait and see what Respawn Entertainment can cook up.

Makes me wonder... I should paint something and sell it for 60 bucks. See what happens.
