So considering that in my first language, English, i barely comprehend the concept of phonics and grammer, needless to say in my attempts to learn Na'vi, i'm on a definitive curve of some kind. For myself I found it helpful to take a 'Montessori' approach, to learning the basic phonics aspects, which uses color-coding to distinguish the different phonograms. I'm using and expansion on the lesson from the Learn Na'vi Activity Book, on two letter words, to illustrate.
vowels consonants vowel dipthongs and pseudovowels consonant digraphs morpheme and leniting morpheme boundrary's adjectives: hay next law clear, certain ngay true pxay many pxi sharp wew cold ye satisfied, content, satiated, full yey straight yll communal adposition: äo- below eo- before, in front of (place) fa- with, by means of few- across, aiming for the opposite side of hu- with (accompanyment) io- above ka- across, covering thoroughly kay- from now (in the future) maw- after (time) mì+ in, on na- like, as ne- to, towards (direction) pxaw- around ro+ at (locative) ta- from (locative); from (temporal sense with other time words) uo- behind vay- up to wä+ against (as in fight against) adverbs: ha so, in that case ke not li already mi yet, still as before conjunctions: fu or ki but, rather, but instead sì and txo if filler: ìì um, err interrogative: au explanation of consternation nouns: 'u thing (object, fact, abstraction) au drum (made of skin) ayu things key face krr time kxa mouth kxll charge, running attack kxu harm lew cover, lid ngrr root pay water, liquid taw sky trr day txi hurry, hurried, frenzy uk shadow vey food made from animal origin, flesh way song (ancient, ceremonial) ya air numbers: 'aw one kew zero mrr five pxey three particles: ko solicit agreement ma O (vocative marker) te (used in full names) tse well (conversation starter) to (part comparitive marker) than pronouns: fo they nga you oe I, me po he/she tsaw that, it (as intransitive subject) prefixs: fì- this sä- (instrumental noun) tsa- that tsay+ those stative intransitive verb: lu be, am, is, are (predicative copular existential verb)(signifies possession) verbs: pey wait, wait for si auxilery verb 'do' affix txey halt intransitive verbs: kä go rey live zo be well, be intact, be as it should be, work correctly, or as nature intended transitive verbs: eyk lead wo reach for transitive modal verb: new want

Thank you Mika, your list compiled words from different sources, into one easily referenced list. A few of the words I could NOT find, and that hampered my ability to say things in Na'vi.
Tee and I are beginning to speak in full sentences to each other, and to a 74 year old Air Force Veteran friend of mine who loves Avatar as much as we do, and likes it when Tee or I through a new phrase out to him to enjoy. Niri Te |

To TireaAean, and Niri Te, thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated!
To compile the list I had looked through about three or four different official resources, Learn Na'vi downloads and wiki, and Wiki books, plus the activity book to come up with the whole list (and hopefully did so accurately). And as to verbaly practicing, well I only have audio sound bites to listen too, unfornately, no partner to practice with, yet! So to add to my original post: Another aspect of the Montessori Method is that its teaching philosophy focuses on learning through patterns. Although I presented the 'grammatical' list fist, techinically the 'first steps' would be through phonology recognition. So I'm representing the same above list in phono/sound groups. The same color coding applies. EDIT: Also this is a great way to learn to 'pronounce' the Na'vi phonogram sounds, because of the repitition in each group (vs using longer words, or alphabet). Plus the benefint that you are learning words, not just sounds) vowels consonants vowel dipthongs and pseudovowels consonant digraphs morpheme and leniting morpheme boundrary's Vowels only group: au; äo-; eo-; io-; ìì; oe; uo-; 'a' group fa-; ha; ka-; kxa; na-; ma; nga; ta-; tsa-; ya; 'ä' group kä; sä-; wä+; 'e' group ke; ne-; te; tse; ye; 'i' group ki; li; mi; pxi; si; txi; 'ì' group fì-; mì+; sì; 'o' group fo; ko; po; ro+; to; txo; wo; zo; 'u' group 'u; ayu; fu; hu-; lu; kxu; 'aw' group 'aw; law; maw-; pxaw-; taw; tsaw; 'ay' group hay; kay-; ngay; pay; pxay; tsay; vay-; way; 'ew' group few-; lew; kew; new; wew; 'ey' group key; pey; pxey; rey; txey; vey; yey; 'll' group kxll; yll; 'rr' group krr; mrr; ngrr; trr; 'k' group (note these are the only two letter words that end in a consonant) eyk; uk; ~'~
