Default The Keystone XL Pipeline

Texas landowner calls out Obama on Keystone XL fast-tracking | Grist
Keystone XL, One Head of the Hydra | The Energy Collective

TL;DR - The government intends to fast-track the completion of the TransCanada owned tar sands oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta through the United States to Houston, Texas across untouched wilderness.

In addition, there is talk of adding another pipeline, the Northern Gateway, across central Canada to the Pacific Ocean.

I fail to understand why anyone thinks stuff like this is a good idea. First, you destroy tons of pristine forest to get the oil out of the ground. Then, you destroy more of the environment to build pipes to carry it. After that, you pollute the air and groundwater to refine it. Then you put it in your cars and whatnot and pollute the air some more.

I think public disapproval is only going to increase from here on as awareness spreads, but I doubt anything will really change

That's what happens when they don't look at alternatives properly

The first nations in Canada are resisting. They dont want their rivers to be endangered. I hope some white canadians have the guts to join them and not just babble about changing lightbulbs and building electric cars...

What I dont get about that pipeline - why dont they just build a refinery next to the mines - why do they have to carry the tar all the way across the US just to refine it there (and probably ship part of it back to Canada again). Its the economy probably - just cheaper to build a dangerous destructive pipeline than to move a refinery. But whatever the reason - this has to stop in any case anyways.

Gasoline here is predicted to be 2EU / liter this week (that is 10$/gallon). This is going to continue as the end of the oil age is approaching. Sad that this also allows such insane projects to become economical.
