Gas leak in the North Sea
There's little mainstream information out there about it right now (which frankly, is shocking to be honest, given the potential severity of the situation) but currently, there is a gas leak at a recently plugged well off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Extraction at the rig halted a year ago and the well plugged, but it seems that gas is escaping into the main well pipe and from the station from an unexpected secondary well above the main well, and an emergency flare, lit as a safety precaution 120 yards from the rig threatens to ignite the gas cloud that has been escaping. So far over 1m cubic metres of gas has escaped and there is a small slick of light oil (A.K.A gas condensate) on the surface of the sea. Experts do not know the size of the second well, which means the potential scale of the explosion and impending damage from it is yet unknown. That's what happens when people are forced to rely on obsolete ideas because others aren't sufficient...
At least it's in a much easier area to deal with than most, and won't reach coasts... hard to see an upside, but it's there...

Even after BP spill happened here (kind of off topic), nobody's opinions have changed about Louisiana's reliance on oil. Everybody just thinks it's the individual company's fault and nothing like that can happen again.

yeah, lets not buy gasoline from TOTAL for a week, that will teach them....
/me thinks of the several 10.000 capped oil and gas wells that are just waiting to do the same sort of uncontrollable blowout.

Well said ^^ - it's very true. Of course, the problem in the cause is LACK of ingenuity, by being forced into retaining the usage of oil by nimbyism and promotion of 'placebo replacements' over real potential replacements.

Its an imbalance of ingenuity. Ingenuity is applied to drill deeper and in more dangerous environments but not to averting the negative effects and "think first". Also a blind faith into ingenuity to solve everything is not really helping. It can solve many things but not all issues we face
