Default James Cameron wants to prove Avatar success wasn’t 'some big fluke'

At last some news of the Avatar sequels:
  • JC is doing another pass through all three scripts right now, just refining.
  • The design process is very mature at this point. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much set.

That’s encouraging, hopefully the shooting will start sooner than later!

Here’s the link.

Cheers!

I actually do think it was a fluke from a financial standpoint. It's still my favorite movie of all time, but I think it made so much money because it was something marvelous and more importantly, unprecedented (despite all of the comparisons to other movies). It was something we as a movie going public had never seen before. I expect Avatar 2 to make lots of money, but I think next time around it's going to follow a more 'normal' revenue trend. Meaning it'll do gangbusters its first week, half as much its second week, half again as much week 3 and so on. Basically like almost every other movie. But not like Avatar. As a result, I don't think it is going to match the total of the first film.

If you look at it from a realistic point of view, Avatar wasn't a great movie because the writing and storyline was somewhat immature. It's the world of Pandora and the technology that brought it to life that is absolutely fascinating! I'm willing to forgive the writing since I love the world of Pandora so much, and still wish I could live there.

I absolutely agree with you! I mean, the movie /was/ a re-hash of Pocahontas is a lot of way and if it wasn't for the world itself it probably would've flopped or at least been at the lower end of the totem pole, if you know what I mean. I hope that with the next movie though, more people fall in love with Pandora!

Some more news on the Avatar 2 front and a brief interview with JC:

“Christmas of ’17 is the target,” Cameron confirmed. “At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.

“We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. (We’ve finished) all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

Here's the link.

Cheers!
