Haven't heard much lately on the Avatar sequels front except that JC is going through the scripts to add his personal touch.
Stephen Lang is doing a press junket for his new movie when he was asked about the Avatar sequels: Lang paraphrased Cameron’s “It’s sci-fi” line when he was asked about Quaritch returning for the Avatar sequels, during an interview with AICN to promote Don’t Breathe: a horror film that, like Avatar, features Lang in the role of antagonist. The actor also referred to the four Avatar sequels as “a massive saga” that he’s now three-quarters of the way through reading: Yeah, the reading of things. We’re getting there. We’re in good shape. We’ll be starting certainly early in the new year. But you know, the thing is, as you can imagine with a film like AVATAR, it’s not like the work hasn’t been going on. The design, the production design, the various worlds, and creatures and environments, that’s all being worked on. Cameron has admitted that part of the extended development time on the Avatar sequels’ scripts can be attributed to him wanting to make sure each screenplay reflects his “voice” as a filmmaker. However, as Lang discussed with AICN, Cameron is also known for wanting to figure out how he’s going to bring each and every creature, location, piece of technology and/or visual in the Avatar scripts to life on the big screen, before he continues with his writing. As Lang put it: That’s what he’s done, he creates problems in which he then needs to invent a technology and a new way to do it, and I believe that’s part of the quite perverse joy for him in this is creating these seemingly insurmountable problems, and then bringing aboard people who can be helpful and say, “This is what we’ve got to do.” So it’s a massive effort, but I have every expectation because I’m pretty intimately aware of what’s going. It’s going to be an absolute joy to behold. Here's the link. Cheers!

I'm curious how he'll return in the sequel. I bet when he does it will be a big surprise. People think Miles is dead and then somewhere in the second film he shows up.

It could be a prequel as well, or he might show up in flashbacks. My 2 cents.

i believe he will be primarily in the prequel, as Colonel Coffeecup was on his second six-year tour, as said somewhere by JC back in 2010. that would make sense, as the rda was on Pandora for roughly 30 years prior to the arrival of Jake Sully, and Colonel Coffeecup was there for over ten years already. i remember reading somewhere back in 2010, that Landau said in an interview that Coffeecup was considering a third tour, near the timeline of Jake's arrival and the events of Avatar CE.
i agree that Colonel Coffeecup might also show up in flashbacks or nightmares of Jake, of hellsgate and the hated murderers of rda/secops.

i really enjoyed reading that, in the long valley between sequels the lengthening void was getting me a bit nervous, but its good to know that according to this the stretching of the time between sequels is just from JC's incredible attention to detail, and pulling together a huge saga, I now want to go back more than ever.
As for coffeecup, I remember John Landou saying on the FX showing of the movie during an interveiw that the they werent going back and doing prequels( I would like a prequel, but still 4 sequels is going to be an amazing journey ) but who knows maybe down the line there will be a prequel , it will be interesting to see what JC has instore for the charaters of this universe.

I heard long ago that the 4th film will be a prequel to show how it began. Earth first finding and going to Pandora. Grace's school, etc. The entire backstory more or less.
