Default My Photoshop Avatar/Na'Vi Faces (56k warning)

Before I post I just wanna say that this topic is about ME! Because this topic kind of got hijacked by others who wanted to show their Avatarizations. So please, make your own topic about your own avatarizations and leave this topic to the soul purpose of me being a pompous ass who wants to show off his own work only, and get comments about it (both negative and positive comments are welcome).

ANYWAY, ever since I started avatarizing in early January I've gotten to the point where I don't think I can improve much on it anymore, so I'm stopping after all the requests I have piled up on me are done. So don't ask me to do any avatarizations. I have too much work as it is, and I'm kind of tired of doing it regularly.

Another thing, I just wanna say I'm so glad that whoever I call "friend" here is a friend because they like me. Because when I became a member of AF, the primary reason for all the friend requests I got was either because they liked my avatarizations, or because I did an avatarization for them. So thanks to all for a fresh start on ToS without any of the commercial reasons for being a friend to people.

Here are all the avatarizations I've made since early January. I'll post more each time I finish a request I got from before.

On a side-note, all these were done with Photoshop Elements 7, so all you big-shots who say CS4 is the bomb can take a gander at these and be amazed at what old-school can do. If anyone wants originals just send me a PM.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brendan Fraser's Avatar

This was my first attempt on photoshop elements 7 at a celebrity avatar... Incredibly primitive, but you always have to start somewhere. Took about 3-4 work hours.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tom Cruise's Avatar

This is my second attempt at a celebrity avatar. Still a bit primitive; many problems with blending, the ears are way too low, the nose is completely wrong, and I didn't fully understand a lot of what went on on an avatar face, especially concerning the stripes. Took about 7-8 total work hours.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

YeahGetSome's Avatar

This is my third attempt. Started understanding stripe-placement and shading (still had more to learn later on, though). Bioluminescent spot-placement is still unknown to me, as I had only watched "Avatar" a grand total of 2 times by then and did what I could from memory (I've seen it 9 times now). The eye blending is still off, but the nose is spot-on correct: this was my best job at manipulating the nose to look Na'vi compared to all other avatarizations.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORUK-MAKTO's (Lou's) Avatar

I'm not particularly proud of this one since the photo was too small to work with, and came out blurry and bad-looking. Not my best effort, but the requestor loved it, however, and showed it to everyone. He even put it as his avatar, and is the person who has thanked me the most about my work, and credits me everytime he shows it somewhere (even on other forums). By far the nicest man I've ever done an avatarization for.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michelle Rodriguez's Avatar

Imagining if Trudy had joined the Avatar program... Truly a sad thing that she died.

Anyway, groundbreaking work for me, as I learned how to manipulate the nose from a side angle, as well as doing all other work at a side angle. Still not the best, much is still to be learned, but it's like the sfx of Star Wars: a lot to be learned, but still game-changing.

Default Part 2

...Continued.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Ikran Clans of the Sea" RPG Fan Poster

This was the defining work that changed everything. From here on, I never manipulated the nose again, and instead used stock photos for everyone. This project took over a month to complete for a contest, which won me my gold membership on AF. This project taught me how to make people into actual Na'vi, not just avatars. Avatars have eyebrows, a more robust body structure, less bioluminescent spots, etc. The Na'vi are the opposite to these things. From this project on, I've always made people as Na'vi, not avatars.

Took a grand total of 47 work hours, though as I consider all the different tweaks I made with each individual, I'm guessing it really took about 90-110 hours.

I know Jasiri looks very similar to A'kta (the two females), mostly because it's obvious I used the same eyes and nose for both. I tried tweaking things around a bit like the eye intensity, openness of the eyes, and a bit of the nose, but you can still tell...

Every face is made from scratch except the humans, and even the human pics aren't in their original form (different clothes, face color, etc.). Characters are in order from left to right as follows: Cyrris (bottom left), Kewong (top left, next to him is his human form), Asho (top right), Jasiri (bottom second to left), A'kta (bottom second to right), and Ja'ta (bottom right).

...And for you guys to ponder, the two Na'vi gals had their clothes added, which would mean.... you can imagine all you want, and envy me for having the uncensored versions.

I'll mention again: if anyone wants originals (each person was originally a much larger picture before) feel free to PM me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

ean Tsamsiyu's (John's) Na'vi Face

This was a request I did per TORUK-MAKTO (John's his life-partner). Obviously, his Na'vi face looks radically different from his original face, and again, this wasn't something I put any extreme effort into since the picture resolution wasn't good, though both John and Lou were very pleased with the outcome. Very nice people.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

navi-ciao's Na'vi Face

By now I had figured out pretty much everything there was to know about avatarizing people. Still some slight things that are off, but nevertheless a job well-done.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Senada's Na'vi Face

This is the hAruNN90's girlfriend. This was done as a surprise for her (I'm assuming), and she absolutely loved it. Later he informed me that her friends were "jealous" and wanted their's done too. Sadly, I'm gonna have to tell him soon that I'm not taking anymore requests.

I actually managed to record this particular project. It was originally intended as a tutorial, but Senada was shy and didn't approve when I asked, so I turned it into a speed-progression video. I was given permission to only post it on the forums, which is why it isn't on YouTube. Since ToS is basically a part of AF, I'm assuming it'd be ok to post it here. Here's the link.

It's about 7¾ hours of work sped up and squeezed into 14 minutes. It pretty much shows the process I go through with an average project.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Human No More's Na'vi Face

This is one of the more recent projects I've done. I just object to the fact that I think I added too many bioluminescent spots. HNM didn't seem to mind...

HNM! If you're reading this, please criticize all you want! I really want to know if you think there are too many spots, because that's been on my mind everytime I look at this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's a lot!

...But nothing compared to avatizer from AF. He's done hundreds, and for that, he has my deepest respect. He's even gotten recognition from Rainn Wilson from doing his avatar! Wilson actually has avatizer's work for his avatar on Twitter, and has gotten incredible fame from all over. You know that famous Quaritch-as-Na'vi picture? He did that one as well.

...But anyway, back to ME! Please comment. Leave anything you want; positive comments, negative criticism... flowers... whatever. I'll be posting my most recent project tomorrow, as I'm on the verge of finishing a picture of three people!! Navifox asked me to do her avatarization months ago... so I looked at the pics she provided, and the one with the best quality happened to have two of her friends in it.

...So I decided I'd lose my mind and actually avatarize her two friends in addition to her. Yeah, I'm that insane.

Anyways, cheers!

THANK YOU for letting me know!!! Now I can rest easy, knowing you agree I made a mistake on your Na'vi face.

I remember seeing these on the AF... good job! I still would like one, but I don't really have any good pictures... and I just got my hair cut for college so its a lot shorter than I like... how backed up are you? I probably wont send in a picture for a couple weeks... although maybe my friends have some from a recent party... we'll see.

But again, amazing work ma tsmukan you deserve your own thread

Thanks. But I've got maybe 6 or so more I have to do after the one I'm almost finished with; I've really got a lot of work. And afterward I really wanted to start work on this one project I've been dreaming to do all this time... I'm trying not to reveal what it is too much to anyone. I wanted to get it done by the end of this summer, and judging by the length of the thing, it'll take a full 2 months of full-on work to complete...

...It'll probably make me a lot more famous on YouTube.

I'm serious, I just don't want to do anymore avatarizations... at least, not for the next 3-4 months. It used to be fun, but now it's become kind of a chore, and I don't want to let anyone down that I've already promised work for. You can ask avatizer on AF or something, he's the best avatar-maker I know.

Thanks for being honest, I respect that, and like I said nothing right now, I'll ask around... and I understand how it could be... and I can't wait to see that one project you have in mind!

~UPDATED~

Just two new overall projects:

For this one, I finished over a week ago, but could never get in contact with the requestor afterward (still waiting). The requestor is on the far right, though I don't know any of their names, except that her name is "Navifox" on AF. But I couldn't just put that and not the other friends' names (since they take up part of the picture as well).

Anyway, this was the first multi-Na'vi conversion I've ever done. I know Navifox's hair looks very strange and sweaty-like, but that was before I was doing the project I'm on now, where I finally learned how to blend hair with the face.

The gal in the middle was especially interesting to do. Her eyes are a combination of three different stock photos of Neytiri's eyes. I couldn't use the same eyes I had with Navifox (gal on the far right), because it'd look obvious. Plus, those eyes weren't bright with life or excitement, so I had to take the eyeballs out and replace them with eyeballs that were opened more. Then I had to replace the tearducts with those from a third photo, since the ones from the first had already been so altered from the change that they had to be removed. Then the lower lids had to be moved upward to create a more "happy" look, and that's how I came up with her eyes; you won't find any photos of Neytiri's eyes actually doing that. Custom-made eyeballs!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jake Warrior's Na'vi Face

This was incredibly altered from the original (obviously), particularly since the requestor wanted to look just like Jake's avatar. I was a bit confused at first, whether he wanted to be an avatar or Na'vi... he chose Na'vi, but then said he wanted everything about him to look like Jake Sully, even making his bioluminescent spot placement the same. So, I did, and he ended up looking almost just like Jake, with the exception of the lips.

This project taught me how to successfully alter skin placement. In other words, I made him have a mohawk while keeping it mostly-realistic-looking.

However, this was but part of a stream of different pictures he wanted made. He also wanted to look like Jake as a Na'vi warrior, with his war paint, windguard, and everything. This was the first time I'd ever added "face paint" to any project. Although not as professional-looking, here's JakeWarrior as Jake... as a Na'vi warrior:

He also wanted a face-meld:

And there were a few others among these that are just singles of the original, etc. This was, by far, the most extensive request I've ever received.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's it for now. Also reminding that the original for the first is much, much larger, in case anyone'd like it.

~UPDATED~

My most recent that I just finished about 20 minutes ago...

Ikran-Boy's Na'vi Face

This was the first avatarization I've done that actually includes glasses. It's also a breakthrough for me, since I now understand how to "erase" any object from the face while keeping the quality of the skin. This is also the first project where I learned how to blend hair into the forehead. Still needs a bit more work, but nevertheless a big jump.

He never asked whether or not he wanted to keep his glasses, so I just made two alternate versions.

Also, I've video-recorded most of the progress I've made with this particular project, so if the requestor gives permission, I'll be making a tutorial out of this face on how to make avatarizations. This is a particularly exceptional work, since I can also show how to blend hair and remove any object or flaw from the face with this.
