There are definitely some "questionable" Avatar fan-fics out there... (Slash-fiction? Do. Not. Want.) but I agree, the fan-fics written about Avatar do seem to be a lot more in-depth, well-written and accurate to the film .
I think it's because the film touched so many of us in such a special way that we want to keep the message and feel of the film alive in any originally created content. That and as others have said, Avatar is not the kind of film to provokes crass reaction in the form of media. It's not all "Kill! Kill! Kill!".
