This Ikran thing kinda bugged me out for a while, now I know the answer... but I still have a question : what could happen if the roles would be reversed, I mean the Na'Vi to choose, that if Eywa controls the bioenergy so as when Quaritch attacked and the Ikrans attacked the fleet without Na'Vi riding them. In this situation you as a Na'Vi could choose the Ikran to fight against a threat, or you still need to pass its test ?

Actually partly yes. Partly no, though, because it still would have been a fight, he still would have "conquered" the Ikran in some way. But that was quite reasonably explained by the idea that the Ikran really chooses its rider and does not want to kill him in defense but as a kind of test. So it is a rough ritual of sorts when one might think of a soft bonding ritual instead, but thats Pandora, I guess

Yeah - that is exactly what I was a bit uncomfy with. "Breaking" means to destroy - in this case the desire for freedom and defense in an animal. Would you want to tsaheylu with an animal that was forced into this? I dont know. Maybe tsaheylu would "explain" to the animal what the reason for all this is and that it is a good thing? But then again - at this point it cant say "no" anymore anyways.

It's not like the ikran are kept in conditions like most horses are... They seem to be free most of the time and flying around, presumably hunting sometimes, maybe even with other ikran, although they do seem to stay near the Na'vi they are bonded to as they seem to always be nearby when needed, which would make sense I guess with something that dee[.
