Yes, time exists but only as a human invention. It is variable, as you say. It slows down as you approach the speed of light. Gravity does indeed affect it. The gravitational pull of black holes is thought to be able to warp space and time.

My little brain cannot process this, but is certain that humans will not be seeing anything 4 billion years in the future
