Default New found exoplanet around Gliese 581 - Earth sized and in the habitable zone

Right on the heels of the prediction of the second earth discovery by next May, a new exoplanet now leads the race as the most Earth like ever discovered.

It has been named Gliese 581 g, in the well known system Gliese 581. It has just now has been detected using the wobble method due to its super small, Earth-like size. Also, it is right smack in the middle of the system's habitable zone. However, it is believed to be tidally locked which means it probably has a chaotic climate system.

The actual paper is here http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/...009.5733v1.pdf

It's not the most compelling read, but I think that the most important part is on page 34. It basically says that we have hardly looked thoroughly at the close stars and we already have found a possibly viable planet. This really increases the chances of finding more and a lot more.

At around page 13 it starts picking up. Before that it just a rather lenghty introduction and analysis of Gliese 581 and its constituent planets. I love looking at the observational data. While I have yet to understand all of it, it gives a good insight into planetary observations.

I will continue reading this paper.

Thanks for sharing.

Amazing

When I read about things like that, I wonder who's just detected our planet in the habitable zone... maybe their space programmes won't be as fail as ours and they're planning to visit... - can hope anyway.

Our only hope is that they neglected their military budgets for space technologies. Otherwise we're ****ed.
