As far as the "defector"---Remember there were a fairly large number of "Science pukes" shown early on in the movie--It would be very easy to imagine that several of them were friends with the larger community at Hells Gate, so I would think that there could be as many as 50~100 people that changed sides during the final moments of RDA "ownership"...I'd also bet there were more than a few tired of the heavy-handed leadership who couldn't wait for a change...
Remembering the "Battle room" scene--it sure didn't look like all of the people at Hells Gate were there--lots of faces from earlier in the movie were not that's for sure....I would bet as soon as it got back that the battle was lost--Max had plenty of help.
