At the first chance they really had to choose freely, they returned to their tribes. Nothing special so far, huh? But get this: Also the natives captured some white settlers, kept them for a while but the ones that have been freed and returned to the settlements atfer some time there took the choice and returned to the tribal people. This went as far that the military and government posed death sentences on settlers who defect to the native peoples! Isnt that amazing? Similar thing happened in the 1960ies - literally thousands and thousands of well educated white middle class people left all that to live in a commune or in a trailer. Back in history, kids often ran off with the circus. But the fact that on prisoner exchanges between native americans and the american settlers, the natives ran back to their family happily while the white people had to be pushed along says everything.
Sweden once had a colony called New Sweden in what is now Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The colony lasted between 1638 and 1655. In the area also lived two indigenous peoples, the Lenape and the Susquehannocks. They traded with the Swedes and exchanged knowledge with them. Also some Swedes moved away and started to live wih these native peoples. In the end the governor of the colony and the priests started to complain about "flykten till de vilske" ie the escape to the wild ones (or the pagans). So it seems that the free life of the natives for many were preferred before the less free life in the colony.

About crossing over to the native Americans, there is a film called Stolen women: Captured Hearts about an American woman taken captive by Native Americans on the plains in the 19th century. Gradually she come to love her new culture and she also falls in love with a native man. When she is brought back to "civilisation" she longs back to the native life and her man.

The film can bee seen in its full lenght on Youtube.
