...But to the Danbury Baptists, Jefferson was referring to the fact that the English monarchy imposed that the Church of England be the state church over all. Jefferson didn't want the same to exist in the U.S., so he referred to this "separation" in which government should never impose any religious belief on anyone, not that religion should be removed from government. There were even Christian church services in Congress, where prayers were led before each convening, back when it first began. ...Seculars don't like the fact, but it did indeed happen. Google "church service" and "congress" and you'll find many results.
The rest speaks for itself... but I do agree government should keep out of religious matters, just like religion shouldn't try to impose itself on anyone through government rule.
