Neither of them die in this one... you might be thinking of a different fic, or maybe you stopped reading at the point where it seemed like they had died.

This is a somewhat tricky balance for a writer who wants to build drama by making it seem like a beloved character has died. You need to make the "death" believable to achieve that drama, but you run the risk of it being TOO believable to the point that people get upset and don't read the rest.

I had someone leave a review for "Last Train Home" on ffn saying that they very nearly stopped reading when it seemed like Jake was dead. On the one hand, I was pleased to hear that my sleight of hand was apparently working on people. On the other hand, I started wondering if I was losing potential readers. And on still another hand (yes, I have three hands), part of me fretted about whether others would read the reviews before the story and have the "surprise" spoiled for them. (Yeah, I know, I'm super arrogant.)

If you'd read a little farther you'd have seen that neither one of them dies. They've got some really big problems to overcome, but they don't die.

And I always have happy endings in my stories
