James Cameron’s record breaking Avatar is set to become the most watched TV premiere over the Christmas period.

According to Sky Movies, Avatar is the bookies’ favourite with Ladbrokes offering 7/4.

Second favourite is Shrek the Third showing on Christmas Day on BBC1 at 3/1, and third favourite is Cars showing on Christmas Eve on BBC1, at 9/4.

Alex Donohue, from Ladbrokes PR, said: “Avatar is a fantastic film and we expect families will be more than keen to visit the world of Pandora on Christmas Eve. It’s sure to be the premiere of the year.”

Avatar broke box office records in 2010 becoming the fastest movie ever to achieve $1bn in ticket sales. The film overtook Titanic, also directed by Cameron, as the highest grossing film of all time, in January 2010.

The sci-fi blockbuster gets its 3D world premiere on Christmas Eve on Sky Movies with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland following a week later.

John Cassy, Sky 3D’s Channel Director said: “We hope 3D will bring people together to enjoy a whole new television experience over this festive period and special time of year.”
