Debating is a tool to dialogue with people. It should never be used to abuse anyone or insult them to prove a point. In fact, when that is the bulk of the person's "argument" it really isn't a debate. Sadly, too many "debates" devolve into personal insults. It shows a lack of maturity. Debating can be used well and in fact it can promote better understanding but if someone goes into a debate thinking that they are only supposed to "win" the battle then all it will do is devolve into a shout and insult fest. The most important part of a debate is having your facts straight, be respectful of the opposing side, and be friendly. Learn from each other.
