You can try to create some leveled graphics from low to high (gradients) over what you already did with the map, to simulate geographic shapes in 2D. 3Ding it could be done with SketchUp importing the map image, scaling it, drawing some curved lines and then using the sandbox to push the levels up and down refferencing gradients .

Gotta go sleep now, I'm gonna start doing something tomorrow and I'll show it overe here due to the progress
