It's also worse forum software. There's a reason so many forums use vB. As zongtseng said, it has the most support with addons, etc as well.

...Does this mean that eventually, one way or another, ToS will end up with the same forum layout as AF currently does? Not with the headers or color changes or anything I understand, but the layout will ultimately have to be changed in the future?

Virtually anything can be altered with the right knowledge of the templates. Also, we would only be using the forum itself, not all of the publishing suite nonsense. It won't look anything like what AF does now. We wouldn't make this change until we had this style completely ported and tested 100% bug free. Also, VB4 will be a year old at least by then, which means much less bugs, hopefully.

Basically, as long as they are still supporting the VB3 line and no major security exploits are discovered, there will be no need to change.

[edit] If you look at a standard VB4 installation, there really is not THAT much difference appearance wise. For instance, the standard VB forum here:

Hm. Actually, that's one of the primary reasons I don't like AF's layout. It is a lot more different than this one. The colors and headers in AF didn't really bother me as much as the change to Vb4 did, because that layout is much, much, much more difficult for me to navigate on.

But if there's no other choice, may bygones be bygones.

Well, my point is that the example above is very close to what a standard VB3 forum is, layout and appearance wise. I'm saying that most of AF's awkward layout is due to the templates in their custom style, not so much in how VB4 is laid out by default. I'm also saying that by recreating this style for VB4 we can very closely, and maybe nearly exactly, duplicate how it is now. A style is much more than colors and graphics, you can control how and where elements appear as well.

Is it possible to change the search mechanism, though? Because that was a major problem I had with Vb4 on AF. The search turned out where you'd type a word, and say you searched "by post". You could search something and it wouldn't show any of the posts, just the thread where the said word was. Then the source link at the bottom of the screen would indicate that you'd be led to a screen that'd show the word highlighted, but when you clicked the link to the page you'd just go directly to page 1 of the topic, and nothing would be highlighted (even if the word was on the page).

If the search could work like it does currently, that'd be fantastic.

Not 100% certain, but it should be possible, vB has a lot of options for various things. Even if it isn't by default, someone will build an add on to fix that, because I know we aren't the only people who would be annoyed by that.

I will definitely consider donating, but I cannot donate personally so my parents will have to be the ones to donate.

I will see about donating a bit of money in the future!

If it was up to me I would have already donated!

I wish there was a "promise to donate" button, if only to demonstrate support for the wonderful work that the staff do. Something that could say "If I had any money then you people would be getting some of it! Bravo!"

Still, doctoral viva in 2 weeks... and hopefully paid employment after that. YAY!

Finally donated to SOME place. ToS, IMHO, deserves my donation more than AF does.

Out of curiosity how long does it take for the usergroup change?

It is done manually once the donation is confirmed, which is generally as soon as I am online after it is made However, it appears someone already changed it for you.
