I tend to think overpopulation isn't nearly as big of a problem as overconsumption. And limiting consumption (as opposed to limiting how many people there are), is a more practicable solution anyways.

For example, in the next few decades, the population will peak at 9.2 Billion. That's a high number! We might need to cut back. We could then try cutting the population in half giving us 4.6 Billion within x number of generations. Or, we could cut the amount each person consumes in half. Both will essentially have the same effect as having a world population of 4.6 Billion.

So to me, the real problem here is inefficiency. We could have 9.2 Billion people in the world and still have beautiful forests, coral reefs and clean skies. But we can't have all that while producing 4 lbs of trash every day.
