The environment you're in when you watch a movie affects your state of mind, so I wouldn't discount watching Avatar on the big screen because of "gimmicks" like the screen and sound system. When you're in a theatre where the lights are dark, nobody can see you and you may feel more comfortable (I know I do). If I were watching Avatar at home, I'd feel sort of awkward knowing that someone might come in and see my reaction to the movie, and that nagging feeling in the back of your mind may detract from the overall experience. The movie can also be more overwhelming -- and thereby be more effective -- when you're in a theatre, because there are no distractions and you can focus completely on the film.
