The Avatar universe does not lend itself well to videogames with perhaps the exception of a deep thinking RPG with emphasis on story but that doesn't sell to the mainstream. It all comes down to who is the developer I guess.

Bioware begs to differ good sir.

Those fees pay for server maintenance, staffing, updates, patches, new content and R&D for whole other games. MMO's, unlike regular games, evolve as time goes on, and continue to cost the developer money to keep them running.

Perhaps but large videogame companies seem to be constantly chasing dreams of having the next big mainstream videogame these days and end up failing. I especially hate how videogames are being dumbed down these days as if companies are terrified of losing a single customer to *gasp* the game being too difficult. Its one of the reasons I love EvE Online so much and the notorious learning curve it has. That said there are good videogame companies still out there which have my respect.

I'm not saying that an Avatar game should be difficult per say but that it should be fully intellectually and emotionally engaging which can require that the game be challenging to the player. To "dumb down" the world of Avatar into a place where you simply kill 10 viperwolves so you can advance to the next objective/quest/chapter would kind of ruin the experience.

MMOs happen to be one of the cheapest forms of entertainment.

Personally, I often hear this line a lot from other people too, yet I find that they are willing to hand over $60 for the next latest big game release every month only to become bored with it in a single week.

Technically, all games are built by "small" developers. Publishers are the ones strangling talent. And Bioware is unafraid to kick publishers in the balls, that's why their games tend not to suck. (DAII not withstanding, that was a travesty)

Ah, but I only get money twice a year. Incompatible with constant fees. One time payment please.

I would love it
I can be a Na'vi even more, see more of Pandora, and so much more...

Eltu, there ARE MMOs which are story-based and, really, primarily single-player but with the OPTION of playing with others (but still completely or almost completely soloable) - in effect, an RPG, with a mild MMO functionality e.g. Star Trek Online. I know you don't like MMOs , but no need to make statements that imply "all MMOs ever are X way".

Quote:
1. It will cost money. I do not want to pay money to talk to all of you.

2. I really like our conversations about deeper things the most. These kind of things I feel can be discussed better here and in IRC, than in a computer game.

3. I want to feel Pandora in my mind, get my own impression of how it would feel to be there. Not really play it out in a game.

4. I am not interested in playing a game. I want to talk to all of you, befriend you Not play a game.

5. An avatar game would force me to focus on that and nothing else if I would like to speak to you. Right now I can do things at the same time, which is very important for me as I am a quite busy person.
1. ToS is always here.
2. ToS and IRC are always here.
3. What about JC's impression of Pandora? (yeah, I know, being picky, but I hope you can get my point there)
4. Fair enough - but many people would be interested. I really like the Avatar game, despite its numerous and in many cases large flaws.
5. Fair enough, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist, just that you wouldn't play.

A company like Bioware would do an Avatar game well, much better than the existing game

As for 3D, there was no mention of a game being only for Nintendo - nVidia already have good 3D drivers, and I hope 3D will expand onto more platforms. based on Nintendo's attitude to games and being opposed to them being considered an art form, their use of 3D will probably be like the early 3D films, where it was IN 3D!!111! - using 3D as a gimmick to get sales and not as a method to improve the quality and immersion. There's a reason you don't see "IN COLOUR", or "WITH SOUND" on films any more.

HumanNoMore - I never said an Avatar mmo wouldn't be GOOD. I said that I, personally, would never be interested in it - and the reasons I gave are my own personal opinions.

Still, to break what you said:
1, 2 - Yes, but an MMO would create a subgroup of the community that not everyone could partake in.

3 - To be honest, that doesn't matter at all. For me, Avatar is what I make of it - what JC intends or not, is unimportant and irrelevant.

4, 5 - as I said, these are MY opinions, and I am saying that I, personally, would never want to play an Avatar MMO. I am not saying it is bad by itself, I am just saying it's not for me.

You mean like the subgroups that play EVE, or post on learnnavi, or play Halo, or starcraft II, or who meet up in RL, ect ect ect...

Huh...

Nintendo is supposedly making a much more powerful new machine, but it remains to be seen what that really means.

The Wii was a disappointment for me. I was practically raised on Mario, Metroid, Mega Man, and Zelda, and in many ways the avenues they could have gone down to make interesting or unique new games/ideas for the older series were not pursued.

At the same time, they basically dumped the core gamer audience in favor of the casual gaming explosion, which turned out to be a bit of a fad, and, whadda ya know, casual gamers tend to fall into fads easily. I bet very few casual gamers who would play things like farmville or some of the shovelware littering the Wii would become core gamers, at least partially because it wasn't "cool" to be into that stuff.

So what I was left with was a console that, while somewhat inexpensive, required a dozen controller addons and didn't really appeal to the right audience. It did the retro gaming thing very well, better than the 360, but that's about all I can say. The core games it *did* have were largely pretty good, but there weren't many, and some of them felt "dumbed-down" (I don't like using that word, but it works here) and made to be easier to play.

If Nintendo's new machine can do as well as they say, then sure, an Avatar RPG would be great.

Although, really, no matter what machine it's on, I'd love to have an Avatar RPG.

I personally think that the current Avatar games would be far better, had they been given more time and more information to complete it thoroughly. It's especially unlike Ubisoft to fail at an RPG game (their specialty).

Now that I think about it, what about if Bethesda made an Avatar game?

Most MMO's have a "pay for 12 months option"

I can already play (and I do play) all games in 3D on my 3D TV, and I have AMD Radeon.

And you haven't happened to get global bans from any game due to 3D software being detected as cheat?
