Glowing, Glowing, Gone - bioluminescent animals disappearing
One of the few bioluminescent animals living in our reach (not under miles of water) is disappearing - the firefly. Albeit their diverse nature and many species, they seem to not be able to take the ongoing light pollution and the loss of habitat that comes with human "development".

I see fireflies all the time. I need to start appreciating them more.

This is sad and I've noticed it. When I was a kid it seemed there were hundreds of them, and in the last handful of years I'm lucky if I see two in a whole summer.

I guess as insects are just not as big and charming as birds and tigers to make it to the public awareness endangered species list yet and not known to be as important to agriculture as honeybees so from that side there is little hope. Maybe they are charming and mystical enough to at least pull some people on their side. I doubt they are endangered yet, though probably some of them are. But to see them reduced that way is really sad - even id some of them make it in some national park, I would surely miss to see them around and I am sure that their reduction will take away some of the magical experiences of children that connects them to nature.

Insects do make endangered species lists - they are just not as visible, and can't create a symbol in the same way as a tiger

Yes, thats what I meant. People just care more about visible and "charming" animals like tigers, elephants, koala bears or especially birds. Some insects do make it though, like butterflies. So maybe fireflies do so too, but I think the idea of conservation and endangered species has a flaw in that it puts more emphasis on these animals that are selected. Ugly, small or seemingly irrelevant animals or animals that are even perceived as "pests" will be rather at the bottom end of the priority list even though maybe (we know so littel about ecosystem interaction) it is more important for the Earth to keep these than to keep tigers
