Energy regulators said 28,000 barrels of oil have oozed into the soil and collected into pools along hundreds of metres of the ["Rainbow"-]pipeline's path northeast of Peace River. Initial estimates put the leak at several hundred barrels.

Ugh - 28.000 barrels. That is about 10% of the daily load of that pipe. And how I hate that connection to the names, makes it all even worse emotionally. "Rainbow-Pipeline", spilling oil into the area of the "Peace river" - This has nothing to do with the magic of rainbows or with peace. Though the spilled oil certainly will produce rainbow colored patches on the water :,(

In 2009, Alberta hit a low for pipeline failures of 1.7 leaks for every 1,000 kilometres of pipe. Alberta has more than 377,000 kilometres of pipeline.

That is over 600 spills a year for all the pipelines in Alberta.

And adding to that, they want to build a pipeline from Alberta right across numerous rivers to the West coast through national forests and wildlive reserves, across indigenous lands to sell tar sands oil to China. Statistics can tell you then how many of the watersheds there will get oil from that almost 2 leaks every 1000 kms
