Der 63-jährige Gründer von "The North Face" und "Esprit" ist zusammen mit seiner 55-jährigen Frau Kristine zum größten privaten Grundbesitzer in Chile aufgestiegen. Das Land ist dadurch in zwei Teile zerschnitten: Die Mitte gehört den Tompkins. Auch in Argentinien gehören ihnen große Landflächen, insgesamt fast eine Million Hektar. Und die Einkaufsliste ist noch lang. In Südamerika gibt es viele Theorien über die reichen Gringos aus dem Norden. Wozu bloß kaufen sie das ganze Land? "Die ganze Zivilisation muss auf das Notwendigste zurückgedrängt werden", sagt Douglas Tompkins.

Billionaire Douglas Tompkins decided some years ago that Civilization is not something that can be left unchecked. He bought huge land areals in Chile and Argentina and declared it a Nature Park. This is the Pumalin Park in Chile, which effectively splits the land in two parts and seperates southern Patagonia from the rest of Chile as he does not allow roads or rails to be built in the park. His statement is that "all of civilization has to be pushed back to the few essentials". Way to go!

And so, many people think that way. Many people, myself included, would prefer civilization at the bare essentials, or even non existent. The difference here is that he has enough money to do something about it. How the world works, apparently.
