Default Yellowstone river oil spill

ExxonMobil oil spill into the Yellowstone River prompts evacuations - CSMonitor.com

1000 barrels of oil spilled into the yellowstone river from an Exxon pipeline under the river that is having high water. The high waters make it very hard to contain the oil or clean up the damage. The yellowstone river is the longest running undammed river in the lower 48 states.

Honestly, can we not go 1 year without spilling ridiculous amounts of oil into our bodies of water?

Why?

It's cheaper to take the risks and do the "clean up".

Can't wait to see how the government kisses ass for this one. I think Joe Barton's lips are still puckered from kissing Tony Hayward's slick, brown, oily cheeks.

I almost flipped out when I saw this one and resolved to come back when I was calmer. *Sigh* Well, it still looks like the cause of the leak is unknown, hopefully that will be found out soon. Also gotta wonder how the farmers that depend on the river are going to cope with this.

From this:
Quote:
The Democratic governor said Exxon Mobil needed to get more personnel to inspect the situation close-up. He also slammed [Exxon Mobil Pipeline Co. president] Pruessing's statement to reporters that no injured wildlife had been found.

"For somebody to say at this early stage that there's no damage to wildlife, that's pretty silly," Schweitzer said. "The Yellowstone River is important to us. We've got to have a physical inspection of that river in small boats — and soon."

The only way they're going to learn is when they are brought to account for things like this.

^This this this. When you have so much money, cleanup and paying compensation is really nothing for these people. Massive fines (I'm talking the size that could badly hurt even an oil company), jail and perhaps even further ....

These sorts of things should get them to act much more carefully.

Earth turns black, wildlife dies and humans suffer too but these guys get off the hook everytime.

Only 36 calls???
Quote:
As of Monday evening, Exxon Mobil said it had received 36 calls to a hotline from landowners concerning oil on their property.

when I hear of this type of things I remember one of Stanislav Lem's stories: a Polish sci-fi writer, more philosophical/sarcastic than sci-fi actually.
The story is about a cosmic wandering race. The rumour went that they exploited their own planet so savagely & dug so many holes in it that one day it simply crumbled under their feet & they ended up hanging in the outer space. Since then they are wandering around the Universe looking for a suitable planet...

But no planet wants them! Rumours run fast in the cosmic family & as soon as they come close, the planets start spewing volcanoes, creating tornadoes, tsunamis & all sorts of natural disasters in order not to let them land... So they still have found none...

From CNN.com Blogs:

Quote:
Even though the oil spill is widespread, it's not always easy to get to. In Laurel, Montana, near where the spill happened, Exxon security guards block off a public road leading to cleanup operations. Media from around the world wait to be escorted into one area to film the spill. [Exxon Spokeswoman] Hassett said the escort is to protect reporters from the floodwaters.
Perhaps I'm more paranoid than I need to be here, but this just makes me raise my eyebrows in suspicion.

Also, this spill in Montana may (or may not) be affecting plans for TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline. From The New York Times:

Quote:
[Montana Governor] Schweitzer yesterday said the Silvertip rupture would not shake his support for the XL project.

"I don't think one ought to confuse what happens with this particular old technology, Silvertip, with what will occur in the future," the governor told the Platts newswire.
I'm getting uncertain about facts again.
