Prior to Avatar I weighed in at 240, i've always wanted to loose some weight but never had the motivation to do it. Over the course of six months I worked my way down to 180 and haven't deviated much from that so far. My approach was to completely cut out fast food / junk food and watch the portions of all the other things I eat. On top of that I stopped being as sedentary.

I don't go to the gym or do proper exercise, but I can usually find some kind of labor intensive activity to do or i'll go for a hike in the woods behind my house. My way is by no means scientific, but it seems to work, and overall I just feel better.

That way is how I would prefer to do it, but I don't have the time.

When I have the time and money to do it that way I most definetly will, though. You don't have to tell a Biology major how to lose weight; I have it down to the biomolecular level! ;D

I dont really find it to take any more time than preparing any other meal. Plus I normally find one day during the week I have nothing going on and cook up a mass of food so I have quick easy access to everything I need

My idea is balance. I still eat things I like, I just think about how often I eat anything. I don't know how much I actually weigh and it doesn't bother me. I don't do exercise specifically, but I like to run.

Soda and mayo, but actually, consider a protein supplement? I know very little about gaining wait intentionally.

Yeah, my dad drinks protein shakes, but if you don't want to go that way, I wouldn't know much either.

Lately, I've been choosing one of two daily meal plans every morning, sort of. They are either, eat one really huge meal once a day, or snack all day and no meals. It seems to be working (?) or so my mom thinks. I guess I should probably pick one or the other (since one caters to a slow metabolism and one to a fast one). I don't really feel like I've lost any weight yet, but I also started exercising again (about three times a week for 50 minutes each time) and feel slightly more muscular.

I tend towards the latter, with one small meal some days, but not every day. Can't say if it works or not, but I guess I'll know when I have some more time to exercise a bit more.

I try to eat a few small meals each day and then go running in the evenings. If it's too hot to go out, I like to do strength training. My tattoo artist actually noticed that I had gotten some muscle when we worked on my arm the other day.

"Don't kid yourself into thinking that exercise, by itself, will make you lose weight. Consider the following activities, and the number of calories an average person burns per hour in each.

Activity Calories/hour
Walking 300
Bicycling 300
Aerobics 400
Swimming 400
Tennis 500
Basketball 500
Jogging 700

Compare those numbers, remembering that they're for a full hour spent nonstop in the exercise, with the calories in the following food items:

Tasty Treat Calories
Peanut butter sandwich 275
Pizza (3 slices) 500
Big Mac 560

Clearly, even an hour a day of exercise doesn't account for much food. And what's the likelihood you'll find the time to spend a full hour, every day, month after month, year after year, doing those exercises?

So, don't exercise to try to burn off calories and lose weight. Unless you're a professional athlete or obsessed with sports, you're not likely to spend enough time exercising strenuously enough to make much of a difference. Exercise will help you lose weight in more subtle ways. "

Smart food choices are necessary for all aspiring Na'vi.

Very true, Sarah. I find that I get in shape faster with good eating habits combined with exercise.

Hey guys...

I'm not looking to lose weight specifically for cosplay or anything, I just would like to do it for personal reasons.

When I went on expedition and came back, I had lost almost 10 kilos off my weight, and developed a decent muscle mass compared to what I was like before... But after I came back, and also changed from the diet I was on out there back to the one here, the difference has had the effect of me putting it on again, a little.

I was just basically looking for some advice.

Firstly, I have a lot of problems with putting weight on in the chest and lower stomach region, but my legs and arms stay largely lean and tough. I was wondering if there was any way to specifically target this area, other than general weight-loss.

Secondly, I really wish to eat a more Na'vi diet... Largely based on fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, that sort of thing... But the problems I have with this are two-fold. A) I am actually allergic to a lot of fruits, they cause me to have a reaction where the inside of my mouth swells up and itches. This encompasses quite a lot of fruits... But I seem to be alright with things like Banana, Mango, Melon, and all vegetables are fine. Nuts also have the ability to do this to me, but so far, I haven't had a problem with peanuts or cashews. It's things like almonds, hazelnuts, brazil nuts etc... B) I am pescatarian, which means I have to rely on sources other than meats for proteins. Not usually a problem for me personally (as naturally, I am ok to eat fish), but if there were any specific diets that involved consuming a lot of just meats for protein, I wouldn't be able to do that.

I guess, lastly (making this hard for you guys now, lol) is that I *really* am not into the whole 'scientific' weight-loss thing, like counting calories, protein intake or anything like that. Nor am I the kind of person who would go to the gym for hours, or just do work out exercises. I do really enjoy walking/hiking, a lot of dancing and also things in the natural environment... Whether that would be climbing trees, or just recreational bushcraft, but I don't know if these activities really do a lot for muscle toning, which is more what i'm looking for. Fitness, I know it improves, and I know that it's good for working the lower-body, which is something i'm happy with, but not so much the upper section.

Any suggestions/links you could throw out there would be of massive help to me.

lol all meat diet, that sounds like some horror story Sarah was telling me about a couple days ago
Zeroing In On Health – The Blog!

Apparently, there are only a few hundred of these guys even in existence, presumably because this diet is extremely unhealthy.
