Indeed...

I have yet to read a fanfic (other than a few short ones that just provided detail on certain scenes) that didn't contain some kind of mistake and/or characters acting out of character. Fan fiction is not as obscure as some people might think, it is just that many people have no interest in it - I have no interest in it for most things other than Avatar, and I am very discerning about which Avatar ones I will read. By definition, it's someone else's interpretation, and that can range from them changing anything they don't like (even mildly) to, as I mentioned before, completely rewriting the story to make it what they wanted it to be.

Well, OOC for you *g* but yes, exactly. Every act of fiction from another person's mind is aifferent take on the characters. Which is wonderful, but it's fandom. Not canon. I signed up for a movie. If I wanted the mess of games and comics and multiple authors, I've got well...other canons. Already, it's starting to get too big, complicated and pretentsious.

What is your definition of selling out?
I am okay with almost all the definitions I'm familiar with.

Compromising on integrity for more money and/or mass appeal - releasing unoriginal, lower quality and/or high volume works is a common act of it.
