not sure really how to explain this but i was thinking about it the other day.

how can the ikrans and direhorse translate what jake is thinking if it wasnt in Na'vi? Or is it just like the ikran knew what he meant by the way he moved or kinda just connected with his emotions...
not really sure how to put that but i think you get what im trying to say.

I think it's more than just language. It's a whole mental & physical connection between them. So I think the creatures are able to just understand his feelings and wishes.

Yeah, he isn't speaking in any specific language to them, he's sending them simple images like "run, stop, fly, land, left, right"

The image of what that is in a person's mind is going to be the same no matter who or what they are, and that's why it works.

I'd guess it's something like moving your own body, only extended to the ikran and Pa'li. Then, the ikra/pa'li clearly has better knowledge of their own body so interprets it in an efficient manner, but still performing the idea of the intended movement.

Personally, I'm wondering how that can work when the underlying neurology/"mind" is so incedibly different and unexpected.

Yes. When we are talking to someone, we also send him the ''message'' mentally, without even realizing it. Some people, especially shamans of South America's tribes can communicate without words when they don't know each others language just by understanding the ''mental message''.
In Christian communities this phenomenon is known as ''gift of tongues''.
