I can certainly see how people might say Valve have lost their way - TF2 really springs to mind, with it becoming Hats And Paid-Only Items Online.

On the other hand, I can appreciate that money valve make could well be going towards a game like HL2 episode 3 - it all depends on what they do with their opportunities.

I don't think anyone expected Portal to become as popular as it did, or create so many memes
