RotK got a clean sweep because of the failure of the other two movies at the Oscars. It was a sympathy vote, not a true one...
...Avatar might accomplish the same feat. However, even though I'm over the Oscars, I'm still boycotting them next year. No question. I had one last ounce of hope after they snubbed "The Dark Knight"; I honestly believed they'd cut the crap and give the people what they want. They got there one quarter of the way by abolishing the stupid "And the Oscar goes to..." line and replacing it with the original "And the winner is...", which should've been done a
LONG time ago.
But what happened with Avatar was unprecedented. Both director and picture went to THL. That made me sick. I'm over it now, but I'm still refusing to watch the Oscars next year. I'll find out the results on some website that's unaffiliated with anything to do with the Academy.
