Aw, pretty cool. Now lets see what they want to do next to ensure that this stupid road is not built. Seems like they have the majority on their side, so they actually have a chance to do this politically (or otherwise expose the government as a dictatorship - something a government does not want people to think in these times...
)

Against anything that common sense mandates to do in this cases, the government has denied access to people to Murillo plaza, where about 50 indigenous people have decided to stay until negotiations take place. Last night, police took away blankets and food from the indigenous staying there. After images of this were broadcast, people immediately started a protest and only after a significant amount of people threatened police forces, they allowed food, water, clothing and people pass to the plaza to attend the protesters. This morning, police impeded the indigenous access to bathrooms nor did let them go out the plaza to eat and look for sanitary services.

They are doing this in the city? Well I can imagine there will be a lot of citizens that witness this and dont find it cool. This Morales guy is not so good at averting this crisis for him. As i see it he will have two choices - violence or diplomacy. The latter would probably look something like him offering to still build the road but give the people who live there money, free education or healthcare or some other minor gifts (minor in comparison to the destruction of land for generations). I hope no one will take that toxic gift. But people that marched for months to go there, I doubt they will give in to anything. They mean it!

As stupid as it sounds, that's the hard reality. Morales seems to believe he is some sort of god or king and that his words are direct commands and his ministers act like if he really was. But we are having enough of it, if anything happens to the protesters, we won't tolerate it any more.
![]() Here's a video of last night's struggle: (Amazingly, La Paz Police Commander was suspended because police let the march pass by the Parliament and the government minister confirmed it today.)

About 21:30 - 21:45, police forces used tear gas against indigenous people claiming to pass to reunite with their families in the Plaza. A car with a water cannon was seen there and many police dogs were used to try to oust marchers sleeping at the Plaza. Twitter #Tipnis has a lot more details about this.

After 67 days of problems, Morales has finally agreed to veto the road's construction and will negotiate more demands this afternoon with the indigenous leaders:
Evo: Ninguna carretera pasará por el Tipnis y el tema está resuelto Will be official this afternoon.

I just saw it on the news - yay - 60 days of walk, 500 kilometers and a support base of 60% of the people - he could not really have continued to supress this.
Congratupations, Tipnis. The news interestingly did not mention that there are 60% of people supporting them or that there was violent police action against the protest... In the news it looked like a few people did that march and by that alone they managed to get Morales to change plans just like that - as if it was that easy ...

The theme didn't get too much coverage outside the country, but it almost makes Morales' government sink as a stone. Wednesday's welcome in La Paz was something not seen since the end of the Chaco War (that defined the Republican feeling over which the country was built since 1932) In just a matter of days, Morales went from "Defender of Mother Earth" to just "another president" even going deeper than Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada as a capitalist. These last events certainly define an before and after, hopefully, people won't put their hopes again in some innocent face and will be very critic of what actions really show about a person. This peaceful march was (and is) so strong that Morales was forced to criticize his own supporters: he said that cocaleros are doing wrong planting coca everywhere.
But these problematic days are just beginning for Morales, his government has to find real solutions to inflation and falling numbers concerning internal production and exportations. From the government, it has been confirmed that there won't be an increment to the minimum wage next year and that "bonuses" will try to cover it. It is also a public secret that the government is financially broke: the only solution is to stop government's subside to fuels.

It seems this whole problem is coming to an end. Yesterday, the government and the protesters settled all the demands made and will just wait until the parliament approve them (possibly this afternoon). Government will aid with transportation to the low lands communities, where the protest started, after the new law gets approved.

Last night, modifications to a "short law" for the protection of Tipnis (and national parks in general), presented by the protesters were approved by the national parliament and the president promulgated it. This morning, many TV images showed that the majority of the marchers were leaving the government seat in buses provided by the government, to their communities. However, their leaders "will be vigilant" on government's enforcement of the Law. As a side note, cocaleros are now protesting against the cancellation of the construction of the road and have vowed they will "use extreme measures to build the road".

Sound slike more trouble ahead, but I guess if there is a law that says no to the road, the defenders of the Tipnis have a good support and obviously the majority of the population behind them. That is good!
