They are both dramatic movies with loss and sadness, but in the end everything turns out alright. A theme that is quite common to the many great animations by Don Bluth.

Maybe we want to believe the same about our reality, that while things may seem glum now, these movies give us hope that someday things will get better. I'm afraid that I no longer see things as simplistic as they are portrayed in films, because this story doesn't have a happy ending.
