Income inequality is the main reason. In countries where wealth disparity is high, so are rates of violent crime, and income disparity in the US is reaching 1920s levels. "The Spirit Level" is a good book on this.

"Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off." - Tyler Durden

I think this can't be stressed enough, as we are social community animals, we tend to get stressed out in situations that we know are unfair on a fundamental level. Then again only those who get the short end of the stick have any reason to complain, because it's not like people would go and complain that they have too much money. I guess greed is there to keep our mouths shut when the inequality is in our favour, as it has been for quite long time, but now things are starting to fall apart.

The gap is growing, and the number of us who get the short end is too. This could go so many different ways
