It's all in the intention. In this case, you weren't trying to make some snarky point about how some obscure and probably bad comic had a similar looking character (a MASSIVE double standard, incidentally) - if people reacted against it elsewhere, I'd guess you were there.

I always knew the normal definition of an avatar before I heard of the mythological definition, my first thought was that they copied it
I didn't hear a huge amount about Avatar before I saw it (scifi, beautiful aliens, James Cameron film) - that was enough - I don't have a TV so never saw the trailer until afterwards (disadvantage of seeing everything adfree).
