ADVOCACY: Don’t Kill Wolves for TAR SANDS!

To make up for the fact that rapid tar sands oil mining is threatening caribou herds by destroying vast swaths of forest habitat in Alberta, the Canadian government has called for killing thousands of wolves.

If Alberta Canada’s tar sands oil fields are fully developed, an area of boreal rainforest the size of Florida will be eviscerated, leaving in its wake giant ponds of toxic wastewater.

It’s obvious why this would pose a massive threat to all wildlife species who reside there, including birds, wolves, woodland caribou and the iconic spirit bear. But instead of preserving the habitat caribou need for their survival, the Canadian government’s answer is to blaze ahead with tar sands oil extraction, and kill thousands of wolves who would naturally prey on the caribou. A paper released this week by the National Wildlife Federation reports that The Ministry of the Environment’s plan calls for aerial shooting, and poisoning with bait laced with strychnine — a particularly painful type of poison.

But I guess "we" "need" the "oil" from the tar sands and of course then wildlife has to be "managed". ! - Translation is: The oil companies want to make a lot of money selling dirty oil and dont care that whole landscapes are destroyed for that and then they blame the wolves and shoot them.

It's more the fact that they don't have as much effect as people who make them would like to believe - directly contacting politicians is far more effective as it's harder for them to ignore.

Canada - or, more precisely: their government - is doing weird things at the moments... only yesterday, I read about Vic Toews, who claims that the internet is more dangerous than guns, and that all internet activities should be monitored, IP addresses of users obtained even without court orders, etc. - I just hope for the sakes of Canadian internet users, that this bill of idiocy called "C-30" is not going to pass...

On the topic at hand here, I have brought this to the attention of people who are working on the preservation of wolves and educating people about their life and behaviour, debunking myths of the "big bad wolf" for decades: Wolf Park at Battle Grond, Indiana. Those of you knowing the graphic novel series Elfquest, might remember that the creators Wendy and Richard Pini (a.k.a. WaRP Graphics) adopted a cute she-wolf called Betsy in the late 1980s.

So, let's spread the word and help the network against greed and idiocy grow!

yes, canada is loosing it in free fall, it seems. Europe sadly too, with all the EU push to internet censorship. luckily some countries still are a bit democratic and sabotage the neoliberal agenda , but still...
Sweden regularly shoots wolves and Germany does that only rarely, but that is only because here they (as well as bear and beaver) are basically extinct and the ones living here are imported and basically closely monitored. But if they dare leave their reservation, they are as good as dead
