Ah noez, bad smudge tool! lol. No, seriously, for shading (shadow/light) and blending colors, try to use the brush tool and pick up the colors which were created by laying 2 colors over each other... if you understand, what I mean ._.
Like shown here: Blending Tutorial by *acidlullaby on deviantART or Big Fat Blending Tutorial by `ctJemm on deviantART Or use the mixer brush, but try to avoid using the smudge tool for blending. It's cool for special effects for example creating flames or for creating fur, but not for standard blending. I mean... this is just an advice, because I think that the use smudge tool doesn't look very clean and pretty and using it from the beginning on for everything might avoid that you "learn how to blend properly digitally". + that's something many other digital artists used to tell me when I used smudge/burn/dodge tools too often/for everything at the beginning, too.
