Default iPads for apes

See Video: iPads for Orangutans -- Program would let apes Skype other zoos - they are giving orangutans at the zoo ipads so they can skype with orangutans at other zoos.

Right... because what's missing in their lives is not freedom, but technology.

I absolutely agree. This is just wrong.

But well, I guess it's something which fights boredom in captivity for apes which can't be released into the wild (again)...

Anyway, it's sad.

What exactly do you think they'd want if they didn't live in a zoo? I'm sure they don't harbor the same resentment you do, anyway, and are just happy to use Skype

I bet they'd prefer the "offline" version of Angry Birds...

Well. I see nothing particularly wrong with this, but just, why? Apart from research purposes, I see no reason for this sort of thing.

At least, there might be some meaningful communication going on, considering what other tweet, text messages or forum entires... err, woops are made by human beings, nowadays...

Not anything in particular wrong with that - they want to see how far their ability for communicatuion goes.

We should be giving iPads to every animal capable of skyping, in my opinion.

I object to the context that the action creates. It frames the apes' lives with the implicit assumption that they are in captivity. It takes the option of being free off the table. Granted, there are doubtless some apes that wouldn't fare well in the wild because they have become too habituated to captivity, but otherwise, this is like me offering you a choice: Would you rather be in prison without a computer, or in prison with a computer? It's a variant on the have-you-stopped-beating-your-wife-yet question. Avatar enchants me because it brooked absolutely no compromise on what constituted a fulfilling existence.

I know that. But science is often human business.
