We Shall Remain | American Experience | PBS
Freely available A stunning documentary about the colonization of native american land by the european settlers. It is heartwrenching at times, beautiful at others. It is shown from the perspective of the native americans, not the colonizers as may previous documentaries on this topic have been. I especially recommend for Avatar fans the #2 episode about the Shawnee alliance. While sadly as we all know, the "indians" lost against the colonizers, they showed a number of attempts of resistance. Episode #2 reminds me very strongly of Avatar "calling the tribes" by a person who had a "divine vision" to defend the land against the aliens.

I have a hard time with PBS docs. Even this as I'm watching seems bland, but maybe I haven't seen enough or something.

Haha , you are not used to German public television docs - compared to them, this one is colorful
- of course it is not like history channel or national geographic, but then again this is about real history, not about some version that is propped up to be "less bland". I think it is very thoughtful and showing a perspective on this that is unusual I believe. And at least for me it was invoking tears at the events that played out there, but that is in part because I do not know all that history in details

Yes, aurora, I have the DVD collection of "We Shall Remain" and I agree it's an excellent docufilm on the Native Americans.
If I recall, I think Wes Studi is in it...and as we Avatarans know he played Eytukan. He's one of my fave Native American actors.
