Understanding someone doesn't necessarily mean you agree with them. Also, as you mention, resources are finite, so no matter how good your empathy is,
someone is going to lose out.

One of the many jokes I heard just after watching in 2010 was that the Toruk is noticeably bigger than ikrans. Apparently, this means that Jake is compensating for something.
