There's always London, it's easy to get to
![]() I guess for me, it's just a question of when it would be as to me coming; if I can get a new job beforehand.

I'm mostly concerned about the additional costs in form of having a place to stay, any extra transportation and so on. The flight is probably something I can afford, but I have no idea what other expenses should I be worried about.

Well, London is easy to get to because all rail and road routes point to London! The only down side is the expense in the capital...
![]() I suppose one way to help decide is work out what a weekend meet up might cost. Sooo... Perhaps a cheap-ish cost per night at a hotel in London would be about £95 per night (say four nights would be £400-ish) Rail transport to London from, say, Scotland would be in the region of £40 with Young Persons Railcard and if you book in advance. Turn up on the day tickets would be about £80 (both of these are one way so £80 and £160 for returns) A 2 day - all zones travel card for London is £30 Then say you spend £40 perday on food and 'stuff' (to be on the say side) it works out at £120. So worst case cost for London travelling quite some distance from within the UK would work out at about £710 for a three day/four night meet up Sounds quite a lot, but I think this would be possibly worst case cost. If we say there was a meet up in April next year, 7 months away, we would have to save £25-ish per week to pay for it. Of course, if rooms are shared and there are less nights stayed, cheaper location, maybe group bookings at a hotel, alterative travel options etc, then the costs would come down from that. Hope that gives an idea of the sort of maximum costs for a long weekend mini-meet up would be. Alan |

Okay, in response to Aquaplant and anyone else skeptical about going due to money, if this does not happen in London, I want to split a room with as many of you as possible, seriously. I don't really mind it being far like up around where Clarke is, but hotel costs can at least be cut way down. I volunteer right now to sleep on the floor

When I saw the hotel numbers, I was thinking "Wow, that's expensive!" But then I realized that Seattle was only cheaper because we got the bulk discount.
(And in the 5 minutes of research I did when I had a spare moment, Edinburgh is about the same, if perhaps ~£10/night more expensive. But then again, I don't know where Alan got his numbers from.)

Even a split between four would make it much cheaper. It really depends on the hotel though, I've done it successfully a few times with 6+ people

Always check their terms. Usually there's a maximum number of people, but, yeah, not that hard to go over if you aren't obvious about it (e.g. trying to fit 10 people into a 2 bed room
)

This is a "minimeet", so I'm satisfied with having only five poll participants. Minimeet will be in London during the second set of dates, unless anyone has a problem with that. I've still never talked to Nieh Teveie since I haven't caught him in the last few weeks, and also haven't talked to Aquaplant recently either. I don't want the cost of London to deter anyone from attending, so the location is still somewhat subject to change.

Well, I'm cool with that. The thing is that as long as the meet up perhaps gets confirmed say a couple of months before the event, it will give people time to book accommodation and travel as required.
I guess other questions come along are... -how long? A day, a weekend, a long weekend or mid week? -What to do with the time we have together? Avatar stuff or sight seeing or both? Group viewing of Avatar...in 3D? ![]() ![]() ![]() But there is pleanty of time to sort all that stuff out.... Alan |

The question would be where to do a viewing, I guess. I'm close enough to help out with arranging things, but I don't have a TV or anything suitable for a group watching Avatar.

A viewing literally didn't even occur to me. Those who have a hotel room will have a TV, and that may have to be the location for that since I definitely don't have one or any space at all at my place, if this happens in London.

My thanks for the heads up Moco Loco
It eludes me as to how I have missed this thread.I would like to come, only 2 things concern me, one is the cost (last time I went to London it was outrageous expensive :p) and the second is that april is the busy season at work and they don't like people taking multiple days off all at once. I shall have to go and chat up my boss and see if I can't convince her to make an exception. |
