This book is an ecological science fiction that have many similarities with Avatar.

Oh yes, thats the whole book. Here is the prequel (written ten years later, 1987) Det gyllene spranget (the Golden Leap) also a very good book with a clear "avatarian" feeling and an ecological message:

In a review of Virgin planet one can read some thoughts about the catwoman that is applicable also on Neytiri:

Sefrems (the male, human protagonist in the book) own alienation is accentuated more because he comes so close to her, and over time he gets more enthralled with her than with his own fellow human beings. And it is not especially strange that he is fascinated by her because she is in all ways better than humans. She is faster, stronger, more graceful and in some sense smarter (the cats are known to be excellent mathematicians, of all things). She has a more pleasant approach to life. Everything Sefrem has found out about ecology through hard studies, she seems to know intuitively. In many ways she is the ideal of a human, even if she is an alien.

About the cats in The golden Leap (basically the same people as the woman in Virgin planet belongs to) one can read:

There is also a sort of reverence for nature. The society of the cats is markedly utopian, and that is because the cats live in harmony with the nature around them and in line with their own inner nature.
