Yes, there is still colonialism going on in Canada. And its a disgrace for Canada - there are treaties, there is a recognition of native land and "first nations". Yet still they just plan to put pipelines through the territories, dig up tar sands, dump the sh.t into the rivers andall that without a consensus agreement of the local people. They may be promised jobs and cellphones and some will take that and just be poor later when the mine leaves the town and the jobs are gone.
In Avatar terms it is like tearing down Hometree, digging up the unobtainium beneath but giving the Omaticaya jobs at the mine and a place in a boarding school where they can learn economics and mining engineering and once the mine is depleted, they just leave everything and go to the next site. But by then, there is no reason to stay there for anyone, if you want a job you have to follow (and there is no other way to feed yourself than taking that job) and after 2 generations then you are told to finally stop whining about the loss of your ancestral lands and just get on with life as a miner or engineer and use that education you are getting and not be so darn ungrateful about it - and stop talking nonsense about trees and ancestors and all that old stuff that is just nice to sell to tourists now.

I can very much understand the First nations people and they have my mental support - they are a bit far away to give them a hand or march with them. I know some have erected villages in the way of the proposed pipelines that the companies will have to clear out. But from all the impressions that I get of this Harper guy, he will not blink an eye in doing so - everything to sell more oil from Alberta to China and the US to make money... and because god will not send another biblical flood, climate change is not a topic anyways either. Thats a Harper quote...

"Humans are storytellers. These stories then can become our reality. Only when we loose ourselves in the stories they have the power to control us. Our culture got lost in the wrong story, a story of death and defeat, of opression and control, of separation and competition. We need a new story!"
