Something I remember seeing on a lot of posters and marketing campaigns prior to Avatar's release was the phrase "Only in cinemas" on the posters and trailers... I'd say it was pretty obvious why they decided to go back on this idea, but did anyone else remember this?
I've seen it happen with quite a number of films in the past...

Hmm, that sounds familiar, and I know I've heard it associated with a lot of other movies. I have honestly always thought it meant "only in cinemas...until they release it on DVD".
The movies always seem to end up on DVD anyway...maybe they're just trying to make the cinematic release more exciting, more exclusive? (I admit, I don't really pay attention to a lot of what the movie studios say along with the release of a movie... ...the release date and format are the important parts!)

That, and because it was technically a lie since you could still download it off the net for free in some places. There's always a leak; there's even a leak now of the actual DVD in its full quality. Sad for purists, good for pirates and desperates.

That never actually means 'NEVER ON DVD/BLURAY' it just means 'Only in cinemas for the moment, but when it goes out then of course we will be releasing it for you to buy...'
It's been the same with every single film I've seen.
