Hey guys, I figured now would be a good time to start asking this.

On Thursday & Friday, will anyone from this get together be in New York City?
On Saturday & Sunday, when and where should I meet the group?

Also: Will the group be spending time in liberty state park or primarily just in the LSC itself?

Kaltxi ma Crickett

To answer your questions:

Yes, those of us who will be there ('This one goes to eleven" from Avatar-Forums and his co-worker, plus me...so far) are intending to do a bit of exploring in New York City on the Thursday/Friday. I've just looked at the weather and it might be a bit rainy on that day in the afternoon. So if you have any good ideas for indoors stuff that would be great.

On the Saturday/Sunday I guess we can firm plans up closer the time, but we will be getting the tram from Newport to the LSC. We could meet up there? Will you be able to join us to watch Avatar as well?

As for just staying in the LSC of spending time in the park. I'd be up for a walk round the park...or even a bit of cycle hire if they do it? I guess it depends of the weather to a certain extent. It certainly would provide a different view of the harbour.

Anyway, it'll be great to meet up. I'm looking forward to it.

For anyone looking for details of the meet up - see below:

--ooOOoo--

New Jersey Avatar Mini-Meet from 16th to 19th May 2013!!!

Just thought I would wake up the thread to see how many will be coming along to enjoy a bit of Avatar community goodness. This will be the last opportunity to explore the Avatar exhibit at the Liberty Science Centre and watch Avatar on the big screen in 3D

If you would like to come along we have arranged a discounted hotel:
The Holland Hotel, 175 12th St, Jersey City, NJ. Tel: (201)963-6200.
Website: Holland Motor Lodge:: outside NJ/NY Holland Tunnel

We have been able to get a discount on the room prices for that time of the year. The rate will be $120 + 14% tax (=$136.80) per night. This can easily be halved (or more) if you room share with someone. To obtain the discount mention 'AVATAR' when making your booking by ringing the number above.

Suggested itinerary:
Well, the concept is (hehehe) we spend the Thursday and Friday exploring Jersey City and New York where there are more things to do than you can shake a stick at.

The Saturday and Sunday will be our Avatar days to enable us to explore the exhibit at the Liberty Science Center and watch Avatar in 3D on the big screen, as well as explore the local area.

Costs:
Just to give you an idea of local transport cost and ticket for the museum check out the following:

New Jersey Transit Tram from Jersey City to the museum:
Trams are every 10 or 15 minutes and cost $2.10 each way with a journey time of 15 minutes. (Website: New Jersey Transit)

PATH trains to New York:
The trains run from Newport (10 minute walk from the hotel) to either 33rd Street New York or the World Trade Center. Journey times are about 20 minutes with the fare each way being $2.25. You can use a metro card, which can be bought at the stations. (Website: PATH - The Port Authority of NY & NJ)

Liberty Science Center:
General Admission to the museum + Avatar 3D is $23.25. You can pre-purchase your tickets from their website on this page.

Eating Places:
As for eating places in Jersey City, besides the Burger King next door to the hotel, there are a shed load of restaurants down Washington Blvd and in the mall next door. (Google Map)

So there we go, a bit more info for our meet up. If anyone has any questions, suggestions etc, then please feel free to fire away. Looking forward to hopefully seeing you there.

Alan

Oooo...I found this in the LSC website:

"Expedition Pandora: The Search for Alien Animals

Free with paid admission but requires free tickets from the Jennifer Chalsty Center.

Get ready for some silly space-themed hijinks as you join the crackerjack crew of the "Aluminum Falcon" on their mission to learn about the animal life in an unexplored region of Pandora! "

Might be worth a look.

If you guys plan to head to NYC, please let me know when so I can try to tag along. Also, if you have interested in any of the places I listed, please check the ticket prices so you are not blindsided by them.

Another thing I will mention is I have not been to the Bronx Zoo in many many years and I have not been to the central park zoo.

Unfortunately, the place I would optimally want to bring the group is not really an option.

The Sands Point Preserve - A Gold Coast Treasure

Because you can't really get there via public transportation.

I am going to have to meet the group at the liberty science center itself since I will be getting there via alternate means (L.I.R.R., subway, ferry). As far as joining you to watch Avatar, I wouldn't dare miss it.

Irayo ma tsmukan for all those great links. It's looking like the weather should be great.

Yeah, I was wondering about getting a city pass thingy. Everything seems to be about $20 wherever you go in NYC. We had a pass last time and it worked a treat! Depends what we end up doing.

One thought was to catch the subway to Brooklyn and then walk back over the bridge into Manhatton and then head for Pier 17 to catch the clipper for a trip in the harbour. But that's just a rough idea at the moment. Perhaps we could meet you in Brooklyn and join us there if we do that?

That's not a bad idea. I haven't been to Central Park zoo or the Bronx zoo. Might be a possibility?

Aye, it is a tad bit far out for us....but maybe we could go to the Guggenheim museum thingy instead as that kinda has a link with the house there.

Kaltxi, Crickett!
Glad to hear you'll be joining us for this meetup!
I'll be arriving in NYC later on in the day on Friday.
Looking forward to meeting you.

And Alan --
I would be interested in checking out that "Expedition Pandora" thing at the LSC, so maybe we could do that too.

Yeah me too. Looks like they have a couple of sessions through the day, so we'll have to make sure we get there in good time I think.

Kaltxì folks,

Just sat at Heathrow right now watching the world walking by. Hopefully my Toruk Airways flight will be ok. Boarding starts in about half an hour. I'll try and give updates along the way.

Just thought I would give ma ayeylan an update on the mini-meet in NJ.

Well for me, as will the other meet ups I've been to it started with the train down to London St Pancras and a trip on the Tube to Heathrow.

^St Pancras International station where I arrived on the first leg of my journey. It is where you can also catch trains into main land Europe.

^And this it life on the tube. It might be celebrating its 150th anniversary and be the largest in the world, but the trains are tiny compared to other underground network. You just have to remember not to breath in all at once or you create a vacuum and the carriage implodes! Hehe.

My Toruk for the trip across the Atlantic was a Vigin 747 called Mustag!!! The was a united aircraft that took off before us. Anyway, a few hours into the flight we caught it up and overtook it! Way to go, Virgin! That's ma Toruk! See piccie below:

Arrival at Newark airport was in daylight although by the time I made it through customs it was dark. It took me over an hour to get through. The queue was massive! You could tell the poor old customs chappy was at the end of his shift because he just about waved me through having only finger printed four fingers and he never got around to taking a photo! I walked away chuckling to myself.

It was now time for a few train rides (I like trains!) Ikran style! First Skytrain to Newark airport rail station, then to Newark on NJ Transit. Then PATH train to Journal Square and finally to Newport and a short walk to the hotel. I arrived at the Hotel about 10 PM, but for me it was more like 3 in the morning. Unfortunately I missed Crickett giving me a ring, but we were able to PM once I hooked up to the Wi-Fi. Next thing I know I'm wide awake only to find it's stupid o'clock in the morning. So I thought I would writing this little sit for anyone who might be interested! Hehehe. Well done it you got this far!

Tune in later for the next exciting episode!

Alan
PS apologies for the large photo sizes - I'm wrestling with my phone!

Right at this very moment I am at Penn station waiting for Crickett to arrive. Hopefully he will arrive in a short while. We've both wearing Avatar T-Shirts to should be able to spot each other.

From imdb:

The name used by the Queen while in disguise (and, later, after her term as Queen ends), "Padme", is the Sanskrit word for "lotus". "Yoda" is also derived from the Sanskrit word for "warrior".

So I guess it was a coincidence.

Also: If anyone wants me to bring an extra water bottle for them or wants a roast beef (with or without ketchup) or salami sandwich (with or without cheese) for lunch, please let me know.

New Jersey Avatar Fan Mini-Meet - Day 1.

Well I started off by doing a bit of the standard tourist thing by writing some postcards for back home and what better place to do that than sat on the red steps in Times Square. I had arrived on the PATH train and I found it rather amusing to watch everyone rushing about and not actually be one of them!
I arrive at what seemed to be a bit of a sweet spot - just at the end of the rush hour and just before the tourist invasion. Here's a piccie:

Having written some words on the postcards, whilst trying to make them aright lu different (you know how it is!) I posted then at the huuuuuge Post Office building Newark Madison Square Garden (which is actually round!). I then made my we into Penn Station to meet up with Crickett. We weren't hard to spot at both of us had Avatar T-shirts on! Hehe.

After a bite to eat at a Wendy's (for those in the UK, it was the equivalent of a Whimpy), it was on the Subway to Central Park as we were going to the Zoo.
...and just to put Crickett's message into context one of the sections was related to the Snow Leopard. Hence the Tebbettin link. We actually got to see a snow leopard to. Awww, a nice 'puddy-cat'! Although it is fairly small that was actually quite a bit to see and we spent most of the afternoon there. Here's a couple of pictures:

^ This is Crickett and me withe the monkey enclosure behind us. As they say, if there isn't a photo with you in it, it didn't happen! Hehehe

^ This was in the nice cool, but fishy smelly, Penguin enclosure. We did see the keeper in there feeding them which was entertaining, but the penguins always are! Hahaha.

^ ...and some puffins that seemed to like coming up to the glass to be photographed! Go figure...

There was also a bit of a sealion show whilst the keepers were feeding them and checking them over which was rather entertaining. They did have a tropical bird section to, but that was sooo hot in there we came out wet through! It made the outside seem cold.

Sooner or later though you have to make track, and what better time than - RUSH HOUR! Well that was fun. Having said Kiyevame to Crickett i made my way back to the Path train. I didn't know you could fit that many people on a train and still breath! Apart for the odd arm pit and Mendel being stuck up my nose I made it back to Newport in one piece.

In the evening I met up with 'This one goes to eleven' and his work colleague who had come down from Boston. We went to a Chinese restaurant and filled out faces, especially me went it came to the desert! Boy was that 'Om, yom, yom'! An ice cream chocolatey thing! I thing 'TOGTE' and his mate couldn't believe I could eat to much! I just replied I had big boots to fill. Hahaha.

Finally to walk in all off we did a bit of a river side walk at dusk and got an excellent view of Manhattan. See the piccie below:

So there we go. Day 2 of the meet up we should be walking across Brooklyn Bridge and meeting up with CyanRachel later in the day. Stay tuned!

Alan

I wish that I could be there! I really wanted to go, but things just didn't work out right. I am saving for the big meetup in July so I'll be able to spend more time with my clanmates.

Awww... Aye, it's a shame you couldn't make it by at least we'll be able to meet upon a couple of months all being well. Irayo for the PM. I'll pass the message on...when they wake up. . Hehehe.

Well Day 2 of the meet up and with 'This one goes to eleven' (TOGTE) and his work colleague in tow we headed in to New York on the PATH to the World Trade Centre. After a brief pause to look up at the enormous new building we made our way to the subway to the High Street station in Brooklyn. We arrived a bit ahead of Crickett so we sat the dappled shade of the adjacent park where kids from the local elementary school were running around doing circuits. Well, I say running around. Some were strolling, others going off like a rocket and some pushing sticks in the ground. Go figure!

Anyway, Crickett so arrived and we made our way to the start of Brooklyn Bridge to walk back into Manhatton....and out came the camera!

It's hard to think it is about a mile to walk across, but it wasa very pleasant stroll at tourist speed, ie stopping at every farts end to take another picture!

Now the cunning plan was to make our way down to Pier 17 to have a bite to eat and then catch the clipper sailing ship for a trip round the harbour. However, the trip had been cancelled due to a bit of maintenance being undertaken. Fortunately weddi not see them chucking bucket of water overboard!

So it was time to work out what plan B was...over lunch! Om, yom, yom.... Aaand the plan was to walk to china town and take in the sights, followed by subway to Greenwich village for a look round before catching to subway again to Times Square. And so we did!

China town was rather large with loads on interesting shops selling stuff that I had never seen before and smell that were equally new! We saw that Confucius chappy. Well a statue of him...,and he say 'If you go to Greenwich you will no longer be in China Town.'

Greenwich also most looked like a home from house to me as the building looked very similar to what you find in the UK. But then the 'village' is one of the oldest areas of New York. It also provided a huge contrast to the 'in your face hustle and bustle you find just a few miles north, which where our next stop was: Times Square!

Having made it there we collapsed in a heap on the red steps and watched the world go by for a bit. After a bit of a breather we walked (or did the huge crowd carry us) the short distance to the bus station to meet up with CyanRachel. We were feeling a bit worse for wear, but soon got a 'pick-me-up' in the form of a scantily glad lady who was wearing next to nothing, but painted gold! (Sorry no photos ma Aysmukan, you'll just have to imagine! Hahaha)

Anyway we picked Rachel up and eventually found a place to eat in an Irish pub. Although dark in there the food was rather agreeable. Here's us having our clan meal with our lazer eyes!

Wondering what to do after, we came up with two choices: cinema to watch Star Trek or go on the evening sailing cruise. After a bit of a chat it was decided! Unfortunately Crickett had to leave us, but we rush down from Times Square to Pier 17 it record time! We got to the sales booth and got told if we ran through we would just make it...and we did!

It was a very pleasant way to round off the evening and see the sun set.

Alan
