Afraid that the time its going to take to get to stars at present tech (eg ORION drive) though they might actually get warp drive tech working. Assuming it doesn't kill the earth with radiation when they fire it up.

One possibly danger of the warp drive is that it irradiates the destination.

Yes put to test the thing we're going to have to use it in earth orbit. You can't just built the thing and sent it out to another star in the first go.
