"CORRECTION: A post on a website in Japan reports that these images aren’t related to the Fukushima disaster. We regret passing along the misinformation."

Hilarious.
Every time there's a mutant animal/plant, people wheel out their pet causes. Odd-shaped vegetables go back hundreds of years in known records, if I recall correctly. Same for mutant individuals.

HumanNoMore, you're right, but that's a leaf coming out of a fruit.
That's not "oddly-shaped", it's crazy. None of the cells in a cucumber fruit should be dividing and activating genes that code for growing into a leaf. There are many parasitic insects that can make plants such as oak trees produce unusual growths by producing compounds that mimic different kinds of signaling pathways in plants, but a fully-functional leaf coming from a cucumber is nuts. Granted, radiation is not nearly as dangerous as many people make it out to be, and if this is a result of radiation, it's something that probably has a staggeringly low probability of happening, but don't shrug it off as a lumpy pumpkin.

The reactor design at Fukushima and Vermont Yankee are shared going into operation less the a year apart.
(They are both General Electric mark 1 boiling water reactors) ,and they both share the same weakness with there backup power generators being venerable to flooding (Vt yankee being on the shore of major river prone to ice jams in the spring) and there containment is still venerable to the explosive build up of hydrogen gas (That issue blew open the outer containment and left the spent fuel pool open the the enviroment at Fukushima) there is one big diffrence with vermont yankee ,VY’s spent fuel pool contains far more fuel than "ALL 6" of the Fukushima units combined, When the state of vermont moved to deny the plant an operation licence because of core public safety issues the Federal goverment stepped in saying the state did not have the authority to do so then and that NRC said the plant passed all safety issues , Then out of the blue came the notice of intent for VY to install a third backup diesel generator and fuel source mounted on an "elevated pedestal" and that this was a "routine update". Many nuclear enginears quote the life span of a reactor vessel at "40 years max" as bombardment of the reactor vessel metal by neutron's weakens the vessels steel and makes it brittle and far more prone to failure when subject to thermal shock , if the reactor vessel where to fail it would be extremely difficult to contain fission products and cool the fuel rods. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/43429132/n...-them-brittle/ Last edited by allroock123; 07-26-2013 at 02:51 PM. |

THANKS for the update Allroock123, I was unaware of NRC's "games" with the Vermont Yankee plant.

August 2013 news:
Large amounts of radioactive water keep flushing out of the ****ushima plant into the ocean as the molten cores are stuck in the ground and water keeps being poured over it and into the groundwater and eventually the Pacific. Deeper underground an aquifer seems to exist that supplies Tokyo with fresh water, if that would be contaminated, Tokyo will have to find a new water source. Exclusive: Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency' | Reuters And apparently the spent fuel pool at building 4 that was unstable from the beginning and had suffered cracks and leaning over with a danger of collapsing will have to be emptied of the still hot rods. There are several hundreds of these rods in there, all radioactive and removal requires incredible precision but there are no machines to handle this, so it will have to be done by humans manually. If the rods come too close to each other, criticality and a chain reaction may occur. The process will go on for years and a single fault could result in an open air nuclear reaction which would be a disaster. Fukushima apocalypse: Years of ‘duct tape fixes’ could result in ‘millions of deaths’ — RT News

Sorry about the necropost, but Vice News did a followup on the situation in Fukushima. Unsurprisingly, TEPCO stonewalled them at every turn and has been consistently trying to cover up the extent of the radiation release.
