Okay, now that I read the plot of the book on Wikipedia, I can confirm that it is dumb.
Some kid is stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger, and for some reason, this is an inspiring religious event, because the kid, like the author, is a empty-headed moron who can't think for himself, and is too afraid to come to terms with the fact that there is no purpose to life, and that the world wasn't shat out by some magical fatass floating through space.
Avatar is about why it is important not to ruin our planet, because we kinda need clean water and forests and things, or we would die, and mast multitudes of other lifeforms would suffer immeasurably first.
It's also about love, and about the importance of preserving ancient cultures, even if they seem primitive.
The difference is pretty damn plain from this angle.
